What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a synthetic analogue of human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) with 94% sequence homology to the native hormone. Two amino-acid substitutions and a C18 fatty-diacid side chain allow it to bind serum albumin, protecting it from DPP-4 degradation and extending its half-life to roughly one week in research models.

Mechanism of Action

Semaglutide activates the GLP-1 receptor, stimulating glucose-dependent insulin secretion and suppressing glucagon release. Research also shows delayed gastric emptying and activity in hypothalamic appetite centres, which together reduce energy intake in study models.

Research Applications

Semaglutide is one of the most extensively investigated incretin mimetics, used in studies of type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular risk and hepatic fat. Emerging research is also exploring its effects on inflammation, kidney function and neurodegenerative pathways.

Supplied as a lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder for maximum stability. Store unopened vials at -20°C, protected from light. Once reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, keep refrigerated at 2–8°C and use within the timeframe appropriate to your study protocol.
