What is Oxytocin?
Oxytocin is a nine-amino-acid peptide with a disulfide bridge, produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary.
Mechanism of Action
It acts on oxytocin receptors in the uterus, mammary gland and brain, stimulating smooth-muscle contraction and modulating neural circuits involved in trust, social behaviour and stress.
Research Applications
Oxytocin is studied in research on social cognition, bonding, anxiety, labour and lactation.
