What is Melanotan 2?
Melanotan 2 (MT-2) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, originally developed at the University of Arizona during research into sunless tanning.
Mechanism of Action
Unlike the more selective Melanotan 1, MT-2 is a non-selective agonist of several melanocortin receptors (MC1R, MC3R, MC4R and MC5R). MC1R activity drives melanogenesis, while central MC3R/MC4R activity is linked to effects on appetite and sexual function in study models.
Research Applications
Melanotan 2 is investigated in research on skin pigmentation, melanocortin signalling, appetite regulation and sexual-arousal pathways.
